The Who's Who of Bacteria: A Reliable Way to Define Species and Strains

Professor Kostas Konstantinidis co-led a study to investigate natural divisions in bacteria with a goal of determining a scientifically viable method for organizing them into species and strains.There has never been a reliable method to cohesively organize bacteria in this way—a problem for researchers since bacteria make up roughly 75% of all living species on Earth.

Protection From Drowning Through AI-Enabled Camera System

20 February 2024

CEE researchers, working with city officials from Columbus, Ga., have created a system that can identify people who might be in trouble on the Chattahoochee River. Using cameras and a computer algorithm, the system can identify people who might be in trouble on the river and give rescue workers precise information that will allow them to get people out of harm’s way or get them out of the water if they’ve fallen in.

Patricia Mokhtarian Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Two College of Engineering professors are among the newest members of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the organization announced Feb. 6. Patricia Mokhtarian and David Sholl are part of a 2024 class that includes 114 new members and 21 international members. Election to the NAE is an honor bestowed on just 2,600 professionals worldwide.

Finding a Better Way to Use Cameras to Reduce Crime

Areas of a middle Georgia city have experienced a 20% reduction in crime after deploying a system of mobile cameras guided by an algorithm developed by Georgia Tech researchers. The team, led by Professor John Taylor, uses artificial intelligence to sift through years of historical crime data to predict where future crimes are likely to happen.
